I never used to be a fall person, but since moving to Texas, it’s the time of the year when the heat gives way to cool mornings and evening porch-sitting. Think autumn leaves, tweed coats, wood-paneled libraries, warm lighting, vintage cafes, and a sense of nostalgic comfort. So, to get you in the mood for cozy fall vibes, I’ve curated a list of movies with vintage fall vibes set in or from the 1920s-1950s with a few from the Victorian and Edwardian era thrown in (because I love them).

Modern Films with Vintage Fall Vibes

  • Brooklyn (2015). 1950s New York & Ireland. Warm-toned cinematography, sweaters, soft romance, and Irish-American immigrant story.
  • The Remains of the Day (1993). 1930s England. Quiet, reserved, emotional. Autumn countryside and manor house vibes.
  • Atonement (2007). 1930s–1940s England. Not cozy in content in the second half, but visually rich with period warmth, especially in the early scenes. Honestly, sometimes I only watch half of it. I felt the same way about the book.
  • Far from Heaven (2002). 1950s Connecticut. Gorgeous fall foliage, vintage interiors, and a deep emotional story.
  • Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008). 1930s London. Light, charming, art deco interiors, vintage clothes, and warm autumnal hues. Adorable and worth the watch if you’ve never seen it! Totally vintage chick-lit!
  • The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018). Post-WWII England. Fall-toned fashion, tea, books, and countryside comfort.
  • The Age of Innocence (1993). 1870s New York, but Victorian fall vibes with candlelight, muted colors, slow-burn drama, autumnal tone throughout. I was obsessed with this book and movie for a while.
  • The Cider House Rules (1999). 1940s Maine. Orphanage, apple orchards, wood-burning stoves, rural warmth, but serious subjects.
  • Finding Neverland (2004). 1900s Edwardian era. Sweaters, leaves, heartfelt storytelling.
  • The King’s Speech (2010). 1930s England. Tweed, therapy by the fireplace, royal drama with warm interiors.
  • Dead Poets Society (1989). 1950s prep school in New England. Classic fall film: blazers, leaves, literature.

Classic Hollywood Movies with Vintage Fall Vibes

  • Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). Turn of the century St. Louis. Has a famous Halloween scene and is nostalgic Americana at its best. I literally cry every time Judy Garland Sings Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (This makes me Christmas list, too).
  • Laura (1944). Film noir with cozy mystery vibes. Rainy cityscapes, trench coats, and elegant interiors.
  • The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947). Romantic ghost story. Set in a seaside cottage, misty, moody, ghostie, but emotionally warm.
  • Now, Voyager (1942). Emotional transformation & autumnal elegance with rich interiors and emotional storytelling.
  • I Remember Mama (1948). Norwegian-American family in early 1900s San Francisco. A cozy family drama with vintage warmth.
  • Shadow of a Doubt (1943). Hitchcock thriller in small-town America with fall setting, suburban leaves, a dark undercurrent under a cozy shell.
  • Harvey (1950). Whimsical and gentle, with a bit of a fall vibe featuring Jimmy Stewart in a captivating role. He has an imaginary giant rabbit and everyone thinks he’s crazy, but maybe he isn’t. The movie is heartwarming and quirky.
  • All That Heaven Allows (1955). Romance with fall colors, fireplaces, and social tension. A widow falls for her gardener in this movie with big autumnal visuals.
  • An Autumn Afternoon (1962, Japan). Technically outside my usual date range, but matches vibe with serene, slow, reflective scenes that are very “autumn” in tone.
  • Autumn Leaves (1956). Starring Joan Crawford, the title is both literal and symbolic, suggesting the melancholy beauty of aging, love, and inevitable decay. Although black and white it has seasonal vibes and a haunting song called Autumn Leaves.

Do you have any vintage fall vibes movies that you can recommend? Have you seen any of these vintage fall vibes movies from my list? Any faves? Many are from books. Have you read any of the books that the movies were based on? Mine faves are probably Meet Me in St. Louis, Dead Poet’s Society, and Harvey!

  1. Hitchcock’s “The Trouble With Harry” was shot in Vermont during fall and is a delightful dark comedy.
